The National College of Natural Medicine was founded in 1956 as a college of naturopathy, a medicine which draws from the healing wisdom of many cultures. Since its inception, NCNM has sought to preserve and convey the classical modalities of naturopathy, such as hydrotherapy, nutritional counseling, herbalism and homeopathy while honoring the principles that guide naturopathic care:
• Primum No Nocere – First do no harm
• Vis medicatrix naturae - The healing power of nature
• Tolle totum – Heal the whole person
• Tolle causum - Identify and treat the cause
• Obsta - Prevention is the best cure
• Docere - Doctor as teacher
More recently NCNM has developed a Classical Chinese Medicine program, which emphasizes the holistic spirit of the classic teachings of Oriental medicine. This system of thought combines the art and science of a medicine developed over millennia, using tongue and pulse diagnosis, herbs and acupuncture to quell disease at its source. The classical Chinese medicine approach is especially well-suited to give new insights into the treatment of difficult and recalcitrant diseases. By bringing the legacy of an independent medical system into modern Western practices, our program is specifically designed to meet the challenges posed by chronic diseases that are difficult to diagnose and cure.
Through the community teaching clinics, NCNM seeks to contribute to the community that sustains it, to promote the cultural competency of its students, and to help increase health equity by providing holisitic care to those most in need.
National College of Natural Medicine hosts 7 community clinics throughout the Portland Metro region. The aim of these clinics is to provide low-cost naturopathic care to members of the community who would not otherwise have access. These clinics are held in community buildings on a weekly basis. Herbs, supplements and other natural medicines that are prescribed at the clinics are offered at a 50% discount.
An initial appointment is scheduled for 1.5 hours and billed on a sliding scale of $20-30 and includes an in-depth interview by a naturopathic medical student under the supervision of a licensed physician. Treatment plans are formulated with the staff doctors and prescription supplements are offered at 50% off their normal retail price. Follow up appointments are scheduled for 1 hour and also billed at $20-30. We cannot take insurance at the Community Clinics, if you would like to use insurance, please consult the full service NCNM Teaching Clinic in Southwest Portland.
